Ukraine can take the lead in growing hazelnuts. 2,000 hectares planted with this crop will begin to bear fruit in 3-4 years with the prospect of receiving up to 6,000 tons of products.

This was stated by the head of the Institute of Horticulture of NAAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Victor Sobol during the Ukrainian-American conference "Nut Ukraine", reports EastFruit.

According to him, growing hazelnuts in the next 3-4 years will remain a promising area.

At present, this crop has already planted 2,000 hectares, on which it will be possible to harvest in 3-4 years. At the same time, the maximum yield of hazelnuts reaches 2-2.5 t / ha, and with proper irrigation and nutrition of the soil with organic matter - up to 3 t / ha. Thus, in the near future Ukraine will be able to grow up to 6,000 tons of hazelnuts.

"For some fruit crops, Ukraine has already reached such a level that it no longer needs new plantings. Due to high productivity and yield, the market is already saturated - we have full storages of apples that still need to be sold. In a few years, a similar situation may develop with nuts, as new trees are planted very intensively, "- said the scientist.

He stressed that in terms of economic feasibility, the process of harvesting nuts should be as mechanized as possible. This will increase the amount of processing and consumption of useful and tasty product.
